The BAPP Community and Literature Reviews
Last week I was feeling rather foggy on module 2 and what i was expected to do. I didn't understand how to do a literature review, my chosen title inquiry wasn't broad enough and as a result I felt like I was going round in circles.
Last night some of the module 3 students held a skype chat that was intended to offer support for BAPP students. It was so helpful! things that I had been thinking about and not understanding for weeks finally started to click into place. My biggest issue was the looming literature review and not understanding how to tackle it. One student shared with me her blog that included a video breaking the process down into easy manageable pieces that made it all feel a little less overwhelming. It explained that the literature review is a process of gathering background information on your chosen topic.
The Literature review steps:
1) Take your summary's and citations and reword all that information into a paragraph. Refer to the Author or article throughout the paragraph- afterall it is their work we are referring to and their own personal thoughts and findings.
Example; "Author" (Year) explained that this study ......
2) Find any similarities or differences within your paragraphs and then reorder them into a logical order in which you are able to see connections form. Label your paragraphs to see if it was a solution, problem or something that needs to be understood. This can then be put into a table dividing up your thoughts easily and clearly.
3) Combine any paragraphs that are closely related. All paragraphs however should be no more than 14 lines. You can group them by theme and remember to deal with cultural differences and worldwide problems.
4) Add in topic sentences. For example; "Dance and Movement therapy is widely recongised.." aswell as transition sentences to ensure that paragraphs flow. This allows your thoughts to move from one author to the next.
5) Add an Introduction and conclusion into your piece. Remember their are no opinions or claims from the writers, so begin it with something like- "The following review of literature confirms...". Make sure that you restate your original points from sources and reflect on the problems, solutions and any gaps in literature.
I found the video in the module 3 blog so helpful so have attached the link below, plus another video about literature reviews for those who like me were so confused. Hope it helps!!

Hi Emma, it is Lauren here - module two. This post has been really interesting to read, thank you for sharing your experiences so far with module two, it has been reassuring. The literature review steps are so logical I will definitely try to incorporate them into my future work.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks
Lauren
Hi Lauren,
DeleteNo worries at all! I have found them really useful as a starting point to give me some flow as where to go next. Hope they help you too!
Emma
Hi Emma. I really found this blog useful! I have never done a literature review so after reading your blog and watching the two video links you shared I feel like I have a much better understanding of what I need to do and how I can approach it. Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteHi Emma,
ReplyDeleteThank you for this blog, i've actually saved it on my Mendeley table to allow me to keep referring to it. I got told by Adesola that a lit review is in fact a research method, so i'm wondering if in our inquiry proposal or our review we should write about that as a way to collect data, and why we have decided to do our inquiry?
x
Hi Clare, Im glad this blog has been of some help. I personally didn't refer to my literature review, but I did make a decision and included in my inquiry proposal that i will be collecting and analysing documents as part of my data collection. Hope that helps x
DeleteAh I see, so you mentioned in your proposal that you used it as a way to collect data? Thanks x
DeleteSuch a helpful blog Emma - thank you. I've reposted the videos on my blog today as feel they are so helpful, I hope that's ok? I've been feeling rather overwhelmed with Module 2 so far and these videos shed some clarity on that. Hope you're going well with module 3, Jen
